Southwestern Pride Conference 2013
formerly Southwest LGBT Leadership Conference
The idea began as a way of addressing and preventing the issues of suicide and crisis situations among members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans-, Queer, Ally (LGBTQA) community and across TCU’s campus as a whole. Since the idea was brainstormed, it has evolved and expanded into this event. The LGBT Leadership Conference, while focusing on the aforementioned main topic, incorporated more LGBT-related issues and challenges that students of all sexual orientations and gender identities face. These additional topics included: spirituality, AIDS/STI prevention, career opportunities, familial challenges, media use, effective strategies for coming out, volunteerism, etc. In addition to the topics and discussions that took place at the event, students and faculty present had the opportunity to network with their peers from other universities and professionals. We have experienced a level of success that we did not forsee and have since grown into a regional conference for the Southwest Region of the United States including, so far, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado.
